Today’s post can be a little controversial, and can be Misconstrued if you don’t read it objectively.

I’m not here judging Deepika Padukone or taking a moral High-Ground.

In fact, it’s the complete opposite. I’m here praising her and her PR and Marketing team for the Bold and Risky Marketing Move to Promote her new movie.

Now, I know some people reading this may feel I’m being Insensitive.
So before you read ahead, let me re-iterate.

My analysis here is purely objective. It’s just from a marketing Stand-Point.
Neither you nor I know what Deepika’s real intent was. And honestly, I don’t care about her Intent.

I have a political view on the whole incident, but in this post, I only plan to talk about the Marketing Side of things keeping the politics aside.

So are we cool looking at it objectively from a marketing perspective?

I’m assuming you said, YES!

Let’s continue the analysis.

You see, in Marketing, Timing is everything.

And Deepika Padukone is now officially my favorite marketer with her latest move.

Her JNU Visit AKA Solidarity support couldn’t have come at a better time – Her Movie Release.

Here is what it did for her:

✔️ Made her the center of conversation of every media debate including my post.

✔️ Enhanced her persona and image as a BOLD, Courageous, and STRONG woman – really aligned with her character and the real life person she is playing on screen.  

✔️ All in all, it’s a move that’s going to bump up the sales of her movie tickets. A lot of it now driven by this new Persona plus the induced Admiration and Super-Heroine indoctrination.

Yes, some would say, it was just a Marketing Gimmick…

A Publicity Stunt…

Maybe. Maybe not.

For the purpose of this article, I don’t care about the Politics of it.

Looking at it purely as a Marketer… I ADMIRE Deepika’s Courage.
It takes B**ls to do what she did with everything she has on stake and to lose.

Personally – I have to give Deepika full marks here for taking a Huge RISK and standing up against the Government. She surely made a lot of enemies with her move while winning some people over too.

So Kudos to her.

07 Sep NO CASH On DELIVERY: Here are the RESULTS of My E-Commerce Experiment!

CASH On DELIVERY (COD) to me is a double edged sword. You can’t IGNORE it, and yet when you use COD, it ends up putting a BIG hole in your pocket.

Although, the number of customers increase thanks to Cash on Delivery Payment Option… here are a few things I noticed.

1) The Refund Requests is relatively higher from COD Customers compared to customers who pay online.

2) COD customers need more management, thus more employees and Customer Support Time.

3) This was an observation which was later verified with data – COD customers generally tend to be more RUDE with the Customer Support and in general compared to Customers that pay online. Of course, it’s subjective to an extent. I’m a COD customer myself. But I hope you can see the point here.

4) As an extension to the 3rd point, the Attrition Rate in the Phone Support is higher (Which is mostly Virtual in my company). Thus adding to the Stress Levels.

5) And lastly, the negative reviews or the Threat of Negative Reviews (most times customers aren’t home to accept the order) is higher from COD customers.

Given all these factors, I recently decided to get rid of the COD option.

Here is what actually happened:

1) My sales dropped by over 60%.

2) My CPA went HIGH.

3) The refund rate dramatically decreased.

4) My net profit went up drastically.

5) My Stress levels were almost down to ZERO.

6) I needed less staff and the team was happier in general.

So to conclude: If you run an E-Commerce Store in India, doing away with COD is something you should test.

Warning: My suggestion is my personal opinion and not a prescription. If you are losing money with COD, if you are stressed all the time… Then it’s a worth while option to test getting rid of COD.

You may lose out on a lot of sales. But you would be happier and will actually take home more MONEY because your net profit will be higher.

Note: If you plan to have investors on-board, then please don’t test this option out. A BIG Revenue (Top Line) is what you need to show your investors… So the volume of sales is important and COD plays a BIG role in getting more sales.

What is Patient Lifetime Value (PLV)?

PLV is the amount of money a patient would spend with a Dentist in his/her lifetime.

Now, any human being today, with an expected life span of about 70 years would spend at least Rs 2 lacs in Dental treatments over his/her life span.

I’m sure you agree that Rs. 2 Lakhs is really conservative figure. Actual patients spend way more in their lifespan.

But, let me take an even more conservative figure to show you how much money you are losing each month.

Let’s assume that an average human being today would just spend Rs 50,000 on Dental treatments in his lifespan.

So you see, if you lose one patient, you are potentially losing out on at least Rs 50,000 worth of revenue.

Of course, you are not making that Rs 50,000 today. But over a period of time. Still, it’s a loss of Rs 50,000 in Lifetime Revenue.

And now, if you quickly add up all the patients you are losing each month because your website is not optimized to Get New Patients… The number will soon become SUBSTANTIAL.

What Is Patient Lifetime Value?


Here is an example:

Let’s assume you have 300 new visitors coming to your website every month.

Out of which, 240 visitors never call you and leave your website immediately.

So you lose 240 potential new patients each month.

You have no way of knowing who they were…

You have no way of contacting them…

Now, if your website optimized to Attract and Get New Patients… Wouldn’t you have easily converted at least 10% of those visitors into patients?

Of course, you would have, right?

So that 10% conversion would get you – 24 Additional new patients each month.

And if we conservatively consider the Patient Lifetime Value to be just Rs 50000.

It sums up to Rs 12,00,000 in additional revenue for you over the next few years.

And this is just the start.

As you know, a happy patient will always bring in his family and friends.

The usual referral ratio from a happy patient is 1:3.

So out of those 24 new patients, even if 10 patients are happy with your treatment. They might get another 10 to 20 new patients.

Leading to additional Revenue of Rs 5 lacs over a period of time.

So you see, you are approximately losing over Rs 17 lacs in revenue every month because your website is not well optimized to Attract and Get New Patients.

Here’s a brief summary of what should be in your video:

– A little bit about you
– A couple of testimonials and then
– A short tour of your clinic.

You see, I would trust someone I see and watch, more than looking at their picture.

And videos do a great job of building Trust.

So make sure to have a Trust Building Video on your website to get more patients.

The 2nd Must-Have Dental Website Element – Give Your New Patients A Free Gift

The first thing you see right at the top of any website is a ‘Hello Bar’.

This is what I’m talking about.

You see, most website visitors will never scroll down. So it’s important you capture their contact details immediately.

And a well-crafted offer like a FREE Consultation on the Hello Bar can help you do that.

To get the Free consultation, your website visitors will need to fill out a form. BOOM! You now have their contact details.

This one thing alone can help you get new patients and grow your clinic dramatically.

Surprisingly, most Dental websites don’t have a ‘Hello Bar’. When I Googled “Dentists in Versova,” which is where I live… I came across these websites. And none of them had a Hello Bar nor a Free Consultation Offer to capture the contact details of potential new patients. They either had boring pics of their clinic or stock images. But nothing that could help them differentiate themselves from others.

So as you see in the examples above, none of these websites have a Hello Bar.

Thus, they are missing out on a lot of potential new patients.

So apart from adding a Trust Building Video on your Dental Website, you should also add a Hello Bar to get new patients.

The 3rd Must-Have Dental Website Element – Don’t Let Them Go Without A Gift

The next thing you need on your website is a Pop-Up.

Now I know a lot of people hate Pop-ups.

But here’s the thing.

Pop-ups are boring because most Dentists use them wrongly.

They write something stupid like, ‘Sign Up for our Newsletter’ on their pop-ups.

No one wants to sign up for a Newsletter… It’s annoying!

But, if you change that message on your Pop-up… And write something like…

“Hey! Before you leave our website, why don’t you avail your Free Dental Checkup Copoun. To get your Free Gift worth Rs 1500, please fill out this form”.

Now, when you have a message like the one above… Your visitors are going to love the pop-up form. Because everyone loves A FREE Gift!

Here are some examples of how other Dentists are using these pop-ups to Get New Patients from their website.

And, this pop-up form should show up when a visitor is about to close your website.

These pop-ups usually convert at 2% to 3%.

Which means you get more new patients and make more profits each month 🙂

4th Must-Have Dental Website Element – Don’t HATE Mobile Phones!

No one today can live without their mobile phones.
I bet, even you can’t.

With the mobile devices in our hands almost 24*7, a lot of web browsing happens on the mobile devices today.

But still, so many dental websites are not optimized to get new patients from Mobile Phones.

Here are a few examples that I came across:

You see, these websites may look fine on your Desktop or Laptop. But when you actually open them on your mobile phone, the website content is either all over the place or represented just as plain-text (Read boring).

So if you already have a website, you need to make sure that it’s optimized for mobile devices.

And here is another important tip. If it’s optimized for mobile devices, make sure your website Loads Fast.

This website took forever to load. I literally had to wait for over 20+ seconds for it to load.

And, no one has today has the patience to wait for even 10 seconds for the website to load. So if your website is taking a long time to load, you will lose out on a lot of new patients.

So, a Mobile Friendly and Fast-Loading website is a must to Get New Patients to your clinic.

#5) Turn Your Dental Website Into a Traffic Magnet And Attract New Patients!

Once you have the first 4 elements added to your website… The last thing you need to do to get new patients is to Optimize Your Website for Search Engines. Especially, Google!

Now, I’m not going to show you how you can optimize your website technically by adding Title, Meta, Header, Alt tags, etc.

I know you don’t want to be an SEO expert. You just want more patients to come to your clinic.

So keeping all the technicalities aside, you should simply invest in an SEO Expert or tell your Website Developer to Optimize your website with the right keywords to rank on Google’s first page.

It’s the single best investment you can make to get new patients each month on auto-pilot.

Once your website is optimized with all the right keywords, and once your website starts ranking on Google. You will start attracting way more patients than you do today.

Just imagine, if your website ranks at the top and if you just get an extra 100 visitors per month. And from those 100 visitors, even if you get just 5 new patients.
